Sir Garry, you were one of my first heroes. Even now, I find that there are no words large enough to hold all that I feel. The profound sadness of losing you, the immeasurable gratitude for having known you, and the immense pride of knowing that this small island gave the world someone as extraordinary as you. So much of what you embodied has guided me. Excellence without arrogance, strength joined with gentleness, confidence rooted in who we are, and the belief that no beginning is too small for greatness. You did more than master a game. You enlarged the imagination of a people and taught generations of Barbadians that there should be no ceiling above their dreams. These tributes may appear as words on a page, but together they carry a love too vast to be contained here. I pray that, from the better place in which you now rest, you can feel that love rising from Barbados, across the Caribbean and around the world, and reaching you. With all my love, and from the fullness of my heart, thank you, Sir Garry. Thank you for being so many things to so many of us. Hero, inspiration, standard bearer and beloved son of this soil. Boys and girls, men and women, cricketers and those far beyond the boundary were inspired by you and will forever aspire to the measure of the man you were. Barbados loved you. I loved you. We always will.
Gone but will never be forgotten. You made us extremely proud RIP Sir Gary 🙏🏽🕊️
I am now 74yrs old and I grew up watching you dominate your craft. To me you are the greatest cricketer who ever lived. Sad that you're no longer with us. Although we have lost a great superstar in you, you have just left us physically but never in memory. Your memory, and quite importantly, your legacy, are eternal. Rest well Sir Garry. I'm happy I had the opportunity to watch and admire you over decades. I am definitely one of your greatest St. Lucian fans. You were truly a genius.
As a girl, I was inspired by the exploits of Sir Garry and other West Indian cricketers of his era to fall in love with cricket. I saved my snack money from school to ensure I could buy a West Indies Cricket Annual, most of which I still have to this day and which I read what I get disillusioned about the current state of West Indies cricket. Thank you for the memories Sir Garry. I will forever fondly remember you.
You will continue to be a legend in my heart and in the hearts of all around the world Sir Garry. Rest in perfect peace.
